OUR STORY

Petsi Pies (pronounced "peet-see") is an independent, community-minded bakery and coffee shop serving scratch-made pies and pastries in Somerville, Massachusetts, since 2003.

Owner Jill Remby purchased the business in 2021 from founder Renee "Petsi" McLeod, who grew up baking pies in her grandmother's kitchen. Before owning the bakery, Jill worked at Petsi Pies for five years as a pastry chef, bookkeeper, and operations manager. From her first day working at Petsi, she felt at home recognizing its uniqueness and shared values with Renee regarding making food and engaging with people.

Although she grew up in central Massachusetts, she put herself through college by working various pastry jobs while raising two children in Vermont. Beginning around age 10 with curiosity and interest in baking, she taught herself the basics with the Betty Crocker cookbook and her mother as her guide. In her early twenties, she landed a job at a bakery and coffeehouse apprenticing under a skilled New England Culinary Institute graduate.

Through these experiences, she learned her way around a professional kitchen: bread baking, cake decorating, and large-scale cooking. With the birth of her second child, she started a home bakery business in a small Vermont town and baked bread weekly, catered small events, and made birthday cakes. By this time, it was clear that her passion was cooking and feeding others. Her food philosophy became well developed and practiced: recipes from scratch, no waste, and making food with the perfect blending of love and technique to ensure the ingredients shine in their simplicity and balance and the dishes bring joy.

As the owner of Petsi Pies, Jill has worked tenaciously to upgrade equipment, streamline business practices and kitchen processes, continuously improve recipes, train and coach a small team of bakers, and grow the wholesale business to get Petsi Pies onto more tables in Metro Boston.

In February 2021, Renee McLeod (nickname Pétsi) announced her retirement from daily operations and ownership of Pétsi Pies, to pursue other creative projects. ““Having the right person helped me know that it was time…I am elated that my vision for a neighborhood pie shop carries on through Jill’s pastry expertise and business leadership. Dare I say it’s bittersweet?” McLeod, who was the face of the bakery since the doors opened in 2003, will focus her energy on writing and publishing a cookbook, painting, sewing and travel.
